Calle Jose Marti

Looking Down into Calle Jose Marti

The view from the patio outside our room where I sat watching the passing stream of humanity. Most of the traffic in Baracoa is bicycles plus more old Willys Jeeps than I've seen in one place. When Cuba was short of fuel in the 'Special Period' (after the Russians pulled out) thousands of bicycles were imported from China. I found the bicycle traffic created a peaceful ambience, especially in contrast to the noise of downtown Santiago. Jeeps make sense due to the fact that Baracoa is hemmed in by mountains and was only recently made more accessible with the construction of La Farola, the amazing concrete highway which climbs over the mountains.
