Castillo Walls

Castillo Walls

Across the harbour mouth from Habana Vieja lie two great fortresses: Castillo de las Tres Reyes del Morro (where the above photo was taken) and Castillo de San Carlos de la Cabana. Massive structures with walls partially carved from the bedrock they dominate the harbour, protecting the bottleneck entrance from pirates and the British Navy. Today the Sala de la Estacion Semaforica still controls traffic in and out of Havana Harbour from high atop the castillo. At the bottom edge of the photo you can see the shadow of the lighthouse, built in 1844, where I took this photo from.
