Once upon a time there were many Japanese settlers on the Gulf Islands. They, like many other islanders, farmed, fished and contributed to the community. However, with the onset of WWII they were declared a threat and moved inland to internment camps. In the late 1980s Mayne Islanders decided to build a Japenese Garden commemorating the Japanese settlers of Mayne Island. The beautiful gardens and displays are a wonderful place to visit and reflect on the ups and downs of the Gulf Islands Japanese community.
