We visited Myanmar, aka Burma, in early 2012. We decided to go due to the changing political situation in the country. Aung San Suu Kyi had been released from house arrest and elections were on the horizon. When we lined-up for our visa at the Myanmar embassy in Bangkok we realized we were in the midst of a rush of tourists to visit the long ostracized country. Limited by a 28 day visa, in-country travel restrictions and slow transportation we visited a limited number of sites. However, our travels in Myanmar are amongst our most memorable. The amazing vistas of karst landscapes, endless stupas and temples and incredible mountains and gorges were dramatic but it was the incredibly friendly, giving people who won our hearts.
